VoidExpanse ships: Stryker

Added on 27 May 2015 by Lurler.

VoidExpanse scientists and engineers continue their work developing brand new combat spacecrafts. And here is another product of their relentless efforts - Stryker, the new assault frigate.

Belonging to the heavy frigates class, Stryker is a classic pattern of a "ship built around the gun". But in this case it's a powerful rocket launcher pod able to shoot any kind of missiles or torpedoes up to the Tier II variants. Due to space-demanding rocket launchers construction, the main weapon system is situated in the middle of the hull being fixed-mounted.

To provide sufficient protection as well as assault abilities, there are also two universal energy/ballistic weapon hardpoints at the sides of the ship. Both have a wide rotation ark covering almost all the space around the Stryker.

This masterpiece of space ship building art designed for high speed assault against the enemy of almost any size. Side turrets can provide good reach in the combat with smaller crafts, while massive rocket launcher is able to deliver deadly punch to the large vessels at long distances.

Powerful engine and oversized main gun brought Strykers design to real lack of armor, so best tactics for this ship will be high-speed boom-zooming the enemy.

Most imporantly, thank you to Ohfive30 for his continued help!

VoidExpanse mod spotlight: Jetisson Cargo & Equipment Pack

Added on 14 May 2015 by Lurler.

Today we have two more interesting mods from one of most active mod creators - loudent2.

First one - "Jettison cargo on death" would be a good option if you can't bear the loss of items when your ship is destroyed. It makes the game a bit easier, but hey, why not? And in multiplayer it allows you to collect the cargo of the destroyed player's ship. But mod creator warns us, however, that there is a danger of duplicating items when mod is used on the lower difficulty settings.

Second mod - "Advanced Equipment Pack" is a pure content mod with two new engines, two new shields, also two energy generators, an RCS, radar and a fuel tank. Those items are better than the stock ones and also more expensive, which is makes sense. This mod also changes the savegame and if you turn the mod off you'll be unable to load the save. So, keep that in mind if you decide to use it.

We would like to thank loudent2 for active participation in the life of VoidExpanse!

VoidExpanse ships: Scarab

Added on 11 May 2015 by Lurler.

So, what's next?

Let's preview one more new ship that's coming with the next big update!

Let me present to you - Scarab. This ship is quite interesting in the way it handles its weapons - it has two rotary mounted cannons on the top, as well as two side facing mine deployment bays (usually mines are deployed from the back of a ship). This arrangement somewhat changes the way you would act in a space combat and I think it is quite a refreshing experience. Not that it's such a big deal, but still :)

This ship is also available in two different variants - for light and heavy frigate classes. It should be an ideal fast combat ship for for all new pilots.

Aside from new content we will have more updates about the new features to come in the next week, when we are closer to the update.

So, what's the ETA you might ask? No exact ETA yet, but we are hoping to have it out by the end of this month!

So, stay tuned and make sure to follow our blog for new updates! :)

Dedicated servers from a dedicated player

Added on 7 May 2015 by Lurler.

If you are looking for stable and well-maintained servers for VoidExpanse multiplayer, then read on! Today we would like to feature two servers by one of our most dedicated follower, the man who also helped us to test and polish VoidExpanse more than anybody else - Kyokei!

So, what is special about these two servers? First, they have been up and running for almost a year already. They are reliable and always maintained and moderated well. So, if you'd like to invest your time in your multiplayer character and get really involved with the community it might be the best choice for you. One of the servers is hosted in US and another one in EU. Both are PVE.

You can find them in multiplayer browser list (see the picture above) or you can connect to them directly using:

VoidExpanse Mod Spotlight: Gas Collector & Engine Trail Tweak

Added on 27 April 2015 by Lurler.

Today we will look at two interesting mods: Gas Collector Mod by Cores and Engine Trail Tweak by Ichy 42. They are pretty new and were uploaded during the last week.

These mods attracted our attention because they change the gameplay and visuals in quite interesting ways.

Okay, Gas Collector mod was created with the main purpose to enrich the gameplay of engineers and prospectors and make mining more diverse. The main idea is that player mines not only asteroids but also collects Hydrogen from stars. It requires special knowledge (it is basic engineering though) and special equipment. The Hydrogen-collecting equipment varies in power, energy consumption and the safe collecting range. Also player can use collected gas to convert it into fuel right from the cargo hold. Naturally, it needs some special equipment too. Bottom line is - it adds a new and quite interesting mechanic into the game!

Engine Trail Tweak is a very simple mod, but with a fun idea to make the game more colorful. The mod was created for players, who travel a lot and use different types of engines for different tasks. Basically this mod prevents player from forgetting to put on the proper engine before leaving the base. Plus it looks visually pleasing too :)

We hope you'll enjoy these mods! You can find Engine Trail Tweak here and Gas Collector mod here.

VoidExpanse ships: Asteria

Added on 23 April 2015 by Lurler.

It is time! After 9 rounds of quick fixes the current version is stable enough to allow us to put our efforts back into making new content for the game. And that's what we've been doing these past few days :)

The progress is very good and we have some new mechanics in. I especially like the hacking. But I don't want to spoil the fun by giving away everything right now!

Anyway, the first piece of update I would like to present is the new ship - Asteria. This was actually made by one of the players, but we liked it a lot, so asked if he'd like to have his ship into the core game. Thankfully, he agreed and now we have this new hull called Asteria in the game. There were a small changes on our part as well, but pretty much all work has been done by Ohfive30.

One interesting point about this ship is that it has all it's weapons in broadside configuration, so maneuvering will be crucial for effective combat. However the firepower it can put up is also quite considerable for a cargo/industrial vessel.

I'm sure many people will find a good use for it!

In the course of the next few days we will be posting more updates about upcoming features and content, so stay tuned!

And don't forget to visit our forums. We have quite a lot of active participants in our community already!

VoidExpanse is finally on Steam!

Added on 2 April 2015 by Lurler.

VoidExpanse launches on Steam for PC, Mac and Linux!

The price of the game is set at $14.99 USD, with prices for certain regions adjusted as per Steam recommendations. We are not planning to raise the price, plus all future updates to VoidExpanse will be free forever.

It was really long way and we put a lot of effort in it - but it finally happened! :)

That it is not the end, of course. Moreover, this moment is a start of a very important time when we could see what our work is worth. We really don't know what will come out and we hope for the best.

We want to thank everyone who helped us. Only with great support of community it was made possible and VoidExpanse is a team-work of AtomicTorch and the players. Great ideas and involvement of the community will help us in our work in the future as well. Good job everyone!

VoidExpanse plays with colors!

Added on 31 March 2015 by ai_enabled.

The latest VoidExpanse version now has an option for people who perceive colors differently! Striving to make playing VoidExpanse easy and comfortable, we added a different visualization modes.

This idea came to us after a discussion we had with one of the players, who showed us an importance of this problem. Surprisingly, as much as 9% of all people have some form of color blindness.

After doing some research we realized that it is not such a big piece of work, but this minor improvement can go a long way and will help a lots of people.

After researching all the forms of color blindness we made a complex improvement, which includes both: alternative shapes of some objects implementation and a palette modes switch.

Now people with Deuteranopia (red-green color blindness), Protanopia (red color blindness) and Tritanopia (blue-violet color blindness) are able to enjoy VoidExpanse properly. All the adjustments are easy to access from the options menu.

Below you can see one example of that mode in action. It makes us genuinely happy that we can make our game accessible to more people this way :)

Physics based render

Added on 19 March 2015 by Lurler.

Greetings!

As you probably know, VoidExpanse was initially created using Unity 4. But now, when the 5th edition of this development platform is stable enough to use we decided dive in and add one of the coolest features it has - physics based rendering.

You can see the difference in the comparison below:

We aren't using all possible texture maps, but even what we have gives pretty significant improvement over the old rendering mode. Surprisingly, it turned out to be fairly easy to switch, but visually the difference it pretty clear if you can compare two pictures. In addition, the materials in the game started to look less "plastic" and reflections on the sharp edges of models now look less "acidic" and more realistic. It was quite handy to have some time available for these experiments to make the game look better right before the Steam release. We are also preparing some updates which include significant improvements to the game's performance and fixing of minor bugs. Stay tuned! :)

Steam keys and accounts synchronization

Added on 14 March 2015 by Silberspeer.

Greetings!

Our players who already purchased the game on our website are already asking us if they can receive a Steam key as well. And we say - yes! Here is the guide and all the answers.

Anyone who bought VoidExpanse from us directly (in our store) may also get a Steam key for the game as well. To acquire the Steam Key, just follow to your "My Games and Items" page and press “Steam Key” button. Then press “Request Steam Key” button (see attached picture below).

Note, though, that even if you activate the key now you won't be able to run the game from the Steam client as the game is not yet officially released on Steam, so the Steam clien won't let you start it.

You will be able to run VoidExpanse with Steam client when the game will be released. And, during the first launch - pay attention: the game will ask you if you have an account with us already. If you do (and the answer is - yes, if you bought the game directly) then you will be able to synchronize both accounts. This way all your achievements and other data will be linked for you.

In the past ten years I worked in a number of different companies. And, well, made an almost four years break to work as a criminal reporter in a major Ukrainian newspapers.

Now I am here to make already great communication between the community and our team more effective, and I am almost always in touch. Yeah, sometimes I sleep, but it happens to people. You can contact me at our forums (the Silberspeer guy), or just write me at info.atomictorch@gmail.com

Pre-release vacation!

Added on 14 February 2015 by Lurler.

What? Holidays? Now? Right before Steam release?!

Yup! :) Starting tomorrow, people in Asia will start celebrations of arrival of the new 2015 lunar year, the year of the Sheep (or Goat). And as you may know our company is also located in Asia. So, we are also going on holidays, starting February 15th until February 23rd with part of the team going back on 27th.

Frankly, we'd prefer to continue working, but alas, our office building will be closed during the holidays and we have no other choice but to partake in the celebrations :)

We will still try to be in touch during the holidays, but if we can't get a reply from us right away, don't worry, once we are back in the office we will be up to speed in no time!

Yup, that's us on the photo next to a traditional "new year tree". Happy holidays!
